Appendix is probably the only organ in the body which has no known function. It is situated in the lower abdomen in front of the right hip. Due to some kind of infection there is swelling in the appendix and this shows up as severe pain in the region. The pain of appendix starts from the middle of the abdomen and moves to right lower abdomen within 24 hours.

In some cases the inflamed appnedix ruptures and the abdomen gets filled with infected fluid. This fluid needs to be removed from the abdomen and area needs to be disinfected.

Appendix Treatment

Appendicectomy is a surgical procedure to remove the appendix from the abdomen. It can be performed either with a small incision on the abdomen or laparoscopically. Appendix pain is generally very sharp and can happen to all ages. Adults as well as children can have this pain and may need surgery. Appendix removal is one of the most common surgery done by using a Laparoscope. In this method, the surgeon will make 3 small holes in the abdomen each measuring about 1 cm in size. Through one of these holes a high resolution camera and LED light is inserted which illuminates the inside of the abdomen. The images are seen on a monitor in the operation theatre. From the second hold the surgical instruments are inserted. The surgeon removes the appendix from the body, cuts it into smaller pieces and removes them from the body through the third hole.

These holes are then closed using a stapler or a single stitch. Small bandages are put on the surgical site. A drain is normally put to remove any fluid which will be generated inside the body at the surgical site. The hospital stay is just 1-2 days and total recovery takes place within a week.
